Finding Freedom With Horses

Finding Freedom With Horses

I found Bridle Up Hope during one of the most difficult times in my life. My family was navigating significant challenges, including abuse and the complexities of raising five children, four of whom are on the autism spectrum. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and struggling to find hope.

A friend suggested that I look into Bridle Up Hope for my daughter. She has always loved animals, especially horses, and I thought this program might give her something to look forward to something to live for.  I noticed changes in her immediately. Her enthusiasm for life grew and she seemed more at peace, more joyful. Seeing her transformation inspired me to consider the program for myself.

Initially, I didn’t think I had the time or energy to add something new to my life. However, a moment with one of the horses, Teddy, changed everything. During my daughter’s lesson, she rode into the parking lot on Teddy. I approached them and placed my face against his. In that instant, the stress I had been carrying lifted. It was a powerful and transformative experience. With encouragement from my husband and friends, I decided to join the program.

From my very first ride with French Fry, I began learning about myself in unexpected ways. French Fry became my "hoga" buddy—a perfect combination of horses and yoga, two things I love. During my fifth lesson, I rode Teddy for the first time. He and I connected on such a deep level, just as we had that day in the parking lot. He was patient with my imperfections and frustrations. Suddenly I found that I could trot and canter - things I hadn’t been able to do in previous lessons due to my challenges with hip dysplasia. I could ride, and it was freeing! I was capable of so much more than I thought I was. I just needed the right mindset - to focus on what was within my circle of control - and the right horse. Each ride following that day was wonderful, not perfect, but exactly what I needed. It all came from focusing on what I could control and shifting my mindset to one of gratitude and possibility instead of frustration and doubt.

Each lesson brought new insights and growth. My experience at Bridle Up Hope reminded me of the importance of sharpening the saw. As a busy mom of five, it’s easy to lose sight of my own needs, but this program helped me rediscover who I am. By making time for the things I love, I’ve become a better mother, wife, and person. I’ve found a renewed passion for life and a sense of balance that had been missing.

Being part of the Bridle Up Hope family has been a gift. I’ve found hope and healing, peace and joy, and a love for myself and those around me. The horses, especially Teddy, have played a significant role in this journey, teaching me valuable lessons and offering comfort. I’m deeply grateful to the Covey family for creating this refuge and to the wonderful people and horses who make it such a special place. Bridle Up Hope has truly changed my life.
